No one knew why the orange-and-white cat had decided to move into the chicken coop.
Perhaps it liked the warm straw.
Perhaps it enjoyed the quiet.
Or perhaps it had simply noticed that one of the eggs needed a little extra attention.
Inside the clean wooden coop, a brown hen rested beside a tiny yellow chick and one unhatched egg.
Right next to them, the cat lay comfortably in the straw with the egg carefully held between its front paws.
It looked completely serious.
Almost professional.
As though it had been hired as the official night-shift babysitter.
The hen watched quietly.
The chick stared with wide eyes.
The cat gently pulled the egg closer and curled its fluffy body around it.
Its expression seemed to say,
“Don’t worry.”
“I have excellent experience sitting on warm objects.”
Every now and then, the cat rubbed its cheek softly against the shell.
No one could tell whether it was helping keep the egg warm…
Or simply introducing itself to the future chick.
Either way, it refused to leave its post.
After a while, the hen stood up and walked closer.
The cat looked at her carefully.
Perhaps it expected to be removed from the nest.
Instead, the hen gently spread one wing over the cat, the chick, and the egg.
For one quiet moment, everyone stayed perfectly still.
The tiny yellow chick waddled closer and leaned against the cat’s soft fur.
The cat looked down at the little visitor, then remained completely calm, as though this had always been part of the plan.
Now the family had one hen.
One chick.
One unhatched egg.
And one very fluffy babysitter who had absolutely no idea how chickens worked.
Still, the cat took its new job seriously.
It kept the egg close.
It stayed beside the chick.
And it accepted the hen’s wing like an employee receiving official approval from management.
That morning, the coop became a little more crowded.
But no one seemed to mind.
Because families do not always look the way people expect.
Sometimes, a family includes feathers.
Sometimes, it includes paws.
And sometimes, the most devoted babysitter in the house is a cat who only agreed to work because the nest was warm…
And the payment probably included breakfast.
