The grand opening of Puppy’s Bistro was the biggest event the neighborhood pets had ever seen.
The tiny restaurant had everything a fancy dining place should have. Little wooden tables were covered with colorful cloths, flowers decorated every corner, soft music played in the background, and a chalkboard near the entrance proudly announced, “Today’s Special: Chef’s Deluxe Feast.” Every customer was greeted with a smile, and every chair had been polished until it sparkled.
Most importantly, the restaurant had just hired its very first waiter.
Marshmallow, the tiny white puppy.
He looked absolutely adorable in his brand-new uniform. A neat little black vest fit perfectly over his fluffy fur, a bright red bow tie sat proudly beneath his chin, and balanced carefully in his mouth was a shiny silver serving tray. He spent nearly ten minutes practicing professional greetings in front of a mirror.
A polite nod.
A friendly smile.
One graceful bow.
Perfect.
He looked exactly like a waiter from the fanciest restaurant in town.
Across the dining room, the first customer had already arrived.
It was Mr. Whiskers, a dignified gray cat who always expected excellent service. Sitting perfectly straight at a table near the window, he carefully unfolded a tiny menu and adjusted his little napkin with impressive elegance.
“I’ll have the Deluxe Feast,” his expression seemed to say.
Marshmallow bowed respectfully.
Excellent choice.
He hurried into the kitchen where Chef Bulldog was preparing the restaurant’s signature meal.
The chef carefully arranged everything onto one beautiful silver platter.
A juicy grilled steak.
A fresh salmon fillet.
One perfectly cooked sausage.
A colorful selection of vegetables.
Everything smelled incredible.
The aroma floated through the kitchen like invisible magic.
Marshmallow stared.
His stomach quietly rumbled.
Chef Bulldog smiled.
“Remember,” his serious expression warned.
“Don’t eat the customer’s food.”
Marshmallow nodded confidently.
Of course not.
He was a professional.
The chef placed the tray into Marshmallow’s paws.
The waiter took one deep breath.
“This,” he thought proudly, “will be my first perfect delivery.”
He stepped into the dining room with complete confidence.
One careful step.
Then another.
Everything was going wonderfully.
Until…
The smell reached him again.
The sausage.
It smelled unbelievably delicious.
Marshmallow looked toward the customer.
Still waiting.
He looked toward the kitchen.
Nobody watching.
Then back at the sausage.
Surely…
One tiny bite wouldn’t matter.
He carefully leaned down.
Nibble.
Just the smallest little bite imaginable.
He quickly straightened up.
Perfect.
Nobody would notice.
He continued walking.
A few more steps passed.
Now the salmon began calling his name.
Its golden surface glistened beautifully under the restaurant lights.
Marshmallow swallowed.
“It would be irresponsible,” he thought, “to serve food without checking the quality.”
That sounded perfectly reasonable.
He looked left.
He looked right.
Nibble.
Another tiny taste.
His eyes immediately widened.
It was amazing.
Perhaps…
Just one more little quality inspection.
Another nibble.
Then another.
By the time Marshmallow remembered he was supposed to be delivering the food instead of reviewing it, nearly half the salmon had mysteriously disappeared.
He blinked.

“Oh…”
This was becoming slightly unprofessional.
He hurried onward.
The customer still waited patiently.
Almost there.
Then the steak released one final irresistible smell.
Marshmallow stopped walking again.
He stared at it for several long seconds.
His stomach growled louder this time.
“It would be unfair,” he reasoned, “to inspect the sausage and salmon but ignore the steak.”
Consistency was important.
Very important.
One little bite.
Then another.
Then…
Well…
Perhaps one final bite just to be completely certain.
By now the platter looked noticeably lighter.
The waiter suddenly realized something alarming.
He had accidentally eaten the entire steak.
Only the vegetables remained.
Plus one lonely lettuce leaf.
Marshmallow gasped.
There wasn’t time to start over.
The customer was still waiting.
Trying to remain professional, he carefully rearranged the vegetables around the single lettuce leaf, hoping the plate might somehow appear fuller.
It didn’t.
Not even slightly.
Still…
A true waiter never panicked.
Marshmallow took one deep breath, straightened his tiny bow tie, lifted the tray proudly, and walked the remaining distance with perfect confidence.
He stopped beside Mr. Whiskers’ table.
Gave one elegant bow.
And gently presented…
One single lettuce leaf.
The cat stared at the tray.
Silence.
He blinked once.
Then twice.
Slowly, he looked up at the smiling waiter.
Then back at the plate.
Then at the waiter’s suspiciously full cheeks.
Something wasn’t adding up.
Marshmallow maintained the biggest, friendliest smile he could manage.
He even gave another respectful bow.
The cat narrowed his eyes.
His gaze slowly traveled downward.
There…
Right beside Marshmallow’s mouth…
Was a tiny crumb of sausage.
The puppy realized it too late.
He quickly licked his lips.
Unfortunately…
That only made the evidence even more obvious.
The cat folded his paws.
His expression clearly said,
“Would you like to explain where my dinner went?”
Marshmallow looked toward the ceiling.
Very interesting ceiling.
He looked toward the flowers.
Beautiful flowers.
He looked anywhere except directly at the customer.
Finally, he offered the lettuce leaf with both paws and smiled even wider.
The cat couldn’t hold the serious expression any longer.
He burst into laughter.
“You sampled the entire menu, didn’t you?” his amused eyes seemed to ask.
Marshmallow slowly lowered his ears.
Then gave the tiniest guilty wag of his tail.
The truth had been discovered.
Just then Chef Bulldog walked out of the kitchen carrying another full platter.
He stopped immediately.
He looked at the empty tray.
Then at the suspiciously satisfied waiter.
Then at the confused customer holding…
A lettuce leaf.
The chef sighed dramatically.
“I knew this would happen.”
The restaurant erupted into laughter.
Even Marshmallow couldn’t help smiling.
Fortunately, Chef Bulldog prepared another delicious meal, personally delivering it to Mr. Whiskers this time.
Meanwhile, Marshmallow received a brand-new employee rule.
It was written in huge letters and hung directly above the kitchen door.
WAITERS MAY SMELL THE FOOD.
WAITERS MAY ADMIRE THE FOOD.
WAITERS MAY NOT EAT THE FOOD.
Marshmallow read the sign very carefully.
He nodded seriously.
The rule seemed perfectly clear.
For the rest of the afternoon, he completed every delivery without taking a single bite.
Well…
Almost.
Once he accidentally licked a little gravy from the edge of a plate.
But he insisted that didn’t count.
From that day on, Marshmallow became the friendliest waiter in the restaurant. Every customer loved his cheerful smile, polite bows, and enthusiastic service.
They simply learned one important habit.
Whenever Marshmallow delivered dinner…
They counted the sausages first.
Just in case.
After all, he wasn’t a dishonest waiter.
He was simply…
An extremely dedicated taste tester who happened to forget which job he had actually been hired to do. 🍽️🐶😂
